An Unforgettable Journey Through the Transformative Power of Rhythmic Writing
Why is poetry has been considered for centuries, the world over, as a tool for personal and psychic power? Why did rulers in traditional societies honor poets as mentors, advisors, and guides? The answer lies in the transformative capacities of the craft of shaping rhythmic, patterned language. Power of Rhythmic Writing brings these ancient techniques home through an exciting, accessible system of meditative writing developed by poet Annie Finch (Ph.D, Stanf0rd University) over decades of study and practice.
This unique self-exploratory journey shares the mysteries of the poet’s ancient path to self-transformation as Annie guides you through four language rhythms, each opening out into a different part of ourselves. Like a holistic yoga class for the mind, the full cycle of Power of Rhythmic Writing moves your words through a series of language-shapes that offer direct windows into the energies of your mind, body, heart, and will–and the interactions between them.
You don’t need to be a writer, artist, yogi, meditator, or seeker to unlock your inner powers through the secrets of writing in rhythm (though all these have benefitted from Power of Rhythmic Writing). You don’t even need any writing experience. All you need is an open mind, a pencil (with an eraser!), and a notebook.
No previous creative writing experience is necessary.
In advance of the online workshop, registered participants will receive a preparatory email with special instructions to prepare for the day.
If you have further questions before registering for a workshop, please read the FAQ below. If you still have questions, you may schedule a phone call with Annie to ask them.

FAQ ABOUT POWER OF RHYTHMIC WRITING
Q have never written creatively before. Will I get anything from this workshop?
Yes. Power of Rhythmic Writing builds on knowledge that is equally available to all of us, and it presumes no prior writing experience.
Q I have an advanced degree in creative writing. Will I learn anything in this course that I don’t know already?
Yes. Even if you have learned something about rhythmic language before (very rare in graduate writing programs today), you will find that Power of Rhythmic Writing approaches rhythmic language in a unique manner that incorporates body, heart, and will, as well as mind. And the skills you will learn through Power of Rhythmic Writing will help any writer, of any genre, to be more effective.
Q I’m not really interested in writing, but I am interested in developing myself psychologically and spiritually. Will this workshop help me on my path?
Yes. The skill of rhythmic language can connect us with wisdom beyond our conscious selves. The tools you will learn in Power of Rhythmic Writing invite you to become aware of unheard parts of yourself –the first step towards growth and change.
Q How did you develop this method?
I was raised with the rhythms of poetry spoken aloud, and I have been a poet all my life. While earning my Ph.D, I pursued my passion to understand poetic meters. I learned to write a range of rhythms in my own poetry while simultaneously pursuing a path of personal and spiritual healing and growth, and eventually the overlap between the two became impossible to ignore.
Q What is the relation between Power of Rhythmic Writing and your other course, Magic of Rhythmic Writing?
The writing techniques and insights into the self introduced in the two courses are identical. The difference is that PRW focuses entirely on writing techniques, lasts for 4 hours, and is open to everyone. MWR is offered in an extended retreat format, lasts for 7 hours or more spread out over multiple days, incorporates ritual elements, and is open to those who identify as women,
Q I’d love to attend, but I can’t afford it.
I don’t want funds to prevent anyone who needs to be there from taking the workshop. Scholarships, sponsorships, and barter are all possiblities. Please contact me and we’ll aim to work something out.
Q I’d love to attend, but the timing doesn’t work for me.
