An ongoing weekly online poetry workshop for poets who know how to write poems in meter and to scan and want to press forward into more subtle and complex approaches to formal poetry.
Are you formally frustrated? Have you finally learned how to write in meter, scan, and make metrical and formal poems, only to find yourself stalled by a frustrating situation—the lack of poetic peers? How can you progress to your full potential as a poet skilled in all facets of your art, when it’s rare-to-impossible to find a community of contemporary poets well-versed in the foundational skills of writing in form?
After all, the more you are ready to press forward into more subtle and complex approaches to formal poetry, the more important a community of kindred metrically literate peers becomes. Without it, just when you’ve attained those long-desired skills and are ready to focus on honing all your metrical voices and developing the full range of your formal potential, you may find yourself stranded with little support for this urgent, central, and compelling poetic work.
Formal Feeling Poetry Workshop is designed to address this need by tapping into Annie’s wide network of students and colleagues who are passionate about form.
FF is a weekly online workshop for metrically and formally literate poets. To thrive in this workshop, you won’t need to be expert at meter and scansion—but you will need to know enough to be excited about taking an advanced level workshop! (If you’re not there yet, Annie’s A Poets’ Ear course is designed to be the perfect preparation).
If you have any doubt that you are ready for Formal Feeling Workshop, please apply by emailing 3 poems in meter to me through this website, and I’ll tell you if you’re ready.)
In Formal Feeling Workshop, we will move forward to support you and your poems as you develop a fully-fledged, subtle, complex, publishable body of formal work. And outside of the weekly meetings, you will also benefit 24/7 from the support of a free private workshop circle located in Annie’s exciting new online community for poets, A Poet’s Craf.
In this long-awaited course for poets who are ready to tap into the astonishing creative potential of poetic form, you can prepare to make discoveries like these:
- How understanding the meters of your poems can help you understand their meanings better also.
- The ways that awareness of your body’s response to different rhythms makes you better at revising
- How learning poetic forms can help you end your poems better, even if you don’t want to use those forms
- How learning how to “scan” your favorite poets and poems gives you access to their secrets
And even this:
- How the metrical undercurrents of your poems can guide you to self-understanding and how changing them can change yourself.
But most of all, you will learn how form can carry you towards the mythical state where, as Yeats remarked, “a poem clicks shut like a box.”
I’m excited to work with you in this workshop! And please don’t let self-doubt hold you back. In my experience, those who are humble and doubt their ability are quite often the most prepared.
