A space where poets of any background—including free verse, form, exploratory poetics, hip-hop, slam, and performance—are invited to make poems with an ear to form, pattern, and repetition.
A Note from Annie:
Poets who find their way to my workshops in form offer many reasons. You tell me you miss the spine-tingling thrills that made you want to be a poet in the first place. Or you’re performing your poems and you want them to truly sing. Or you’re sick of wrestling with what makes a line anyway and not knowing if your poem is finished. Or you’re simply curious to master the parts of poetry-writing your education skipped over.
No wonder we have these feelings. For decades poetry-writing education has largely ignored basic aspects of our art. But luckily, within the reach of our hands and our heartbeats, the music and the power are still there–and here is a workshop where you can make them your own.
Formal Feeling Poetry Workshop offers a space where poets of any background—including free verse, form, exploratory poetics, hip-hop, slam, and performance—are invited to make poems with an ear to form, pattern, and repetition. While there is no pressure to use form if your poem would be better without it, we will hold meter, form, refrain, rhythm, and pattern close at hand in case we want to tap into their powers.
Prepare to make discoveries like these:
How understanding the meters of your poems can help you understand their meanings better also.
The ways that awareness of your body’s response to different rhythms makes you better at revising
How learning poetic forms can help you end your poems better, even if you don’t want to use those forms
How learning how to “scan” your favorite poets and poems gives you access to their secrets
